A home electrical inspection ensures that your system meets safety standards, functions efficiently, and avoids potential hazards. Whether you’re buying a new home, upgrading an older property, or preparing for a renovation, an electrical inspection can give you peace of mind.

This blog provides a comprehensive electrical inspection checklist to help you understand what to look for, when an inspection is required, and what might fail an inspection.

What Is an Electrical Inspection?

An electrical inspection is a thorough evaluation of your home’s electrical system conducted by a qualified professional. The goal is to ensure all components meet safety standards, comply with local codes, and function as intended. Inspections help identify potential hazards such as faulty wiring, overloaded circuits, or outdated components that could lead to fire or electrical shock.

When Is an Electrical Inspection Required?

There are several situations when an electrical inspection is required to ensure the safety and reliability of your system:

Home Purchase or Sale

If you’re buying or selling a home, an inspection provides a clear understanding of the electrical system’s condition. Many lenders and insurance companies require it before closing.

Renovations or Additions

Major home improvements, such as adding a room or upgrading a kitchen, often require electrical work. Inspections ensure all new installations comply with current codes.

After Storm Damage

If your home has experienced flooding, lightning strikes, or other weather-related events, an inspection is critical to ensure the system remains safe.

What Is An Electrical Panel? https://www.perfecthomeservices.com/what-is-an-electrical-panel/ Thu, 12 Dec 2024 12:44:52 +0000 https://www.perfecthomeservices.com/?p=5306 The electrical panel, sometimes referred to as the circuit breaker box or breaker panel, is the central hub of your home’s electrical system. It’s where the electricity from the utility company enters your home, and it distributes that power to various circuits that run to different parts of your home. Understanding what an electrical panel is and how it works is key to maintaining a safe, efficient electrical system in your home.

In this guide, we’ll cover the basics of what an electrical panel is, how it works, the components involved, and when you might need an electrical panel upgrade or replacement. By understanding these fundamentals, homeowners can make informed decisions about maintaining or upgrading their home electrical panel.

What Is an Electrical Panel?

An electrical panel is a metal box, usually installed in a utility room, garage, basement, or a similar space, which houses circuit breakers or fuses. This box acts as the main distribution point for electricity in the home, taking incoming power from the utility grid and routing it to different circuits within the home. Each circuit powers specific areas or appliances, from lights and outlets to larger appliances like your HVAC system.

When you plug in a device or turn on an appliance, electricity flows from the electrical panel to that specific area. If too much electricity flows through the circuit, a breaker within the panel will “trip,” cutting off the power to prevent overheating and reduce the risk of fire or other hazards.

Components of an Electrical Panel

To better understand what an electrical panel is and its functions, it helps to look at the main components inside it:

  • Main Breaker: This is a large breaker that controls the flow of electricity into the entire panel. If you need to cut off all power to your home, flipping the main breaker is how you do it.
  • Circuit Breakers: Individual switches that control power to specific circuits. Each circuit breaker is rated for a specific amount of electricity, and it will “trip” or shut off when too much power is drawn.
  • Bus Bars: These metal bars distribute electricity from the main breaker to the individual circuit breakers.
  • Neutral and Ground Bars: These bars provide pathways for electricity to safely return to the ground, reducing the risk of electric shock and fire.

Each component plays a critical role in the safe operation of your home’s electrical system.

Circuit Breakers and How They Work

The circuit breakers within your electrical panel are essential for managing the electricity flow throughout your home. They act as safety devices, shutting off power to circuits that draw too much current, which can happen if too many devices are plugged into a circuit or if there’s a short circuit.

Each circuit breaker has a specific rating, typically 15 to 20 amps for regular circuits and up to 50 amps for high-demand circuits. If the current flowing through a breaker exceeds its rating, it will trip, cutting off the flow of electricity to prevent damage and reduce the risk of fire.

When Do You Need an Electrical Panel Upgrade?

Over time, you may find that your existing electrical panel no longer meets your home’s power needs. This situation can arise if you’re adding more appliances, undertaking a home renovation, or experiencing frequent circuit breaker trips. Here are some signs that it may be time for an electrical panel upgrade:

  • Frequent Breaker Trips: If your breakers are constantly tripping, it’s likely because your current electrical panel cannot handle your home’s power needs.
  • Home Renovations or Additions: Adding new rooms, appliances, or higher-demand items like hot tubs can increase your power needs and may require an electrical panel upgrade.
  • Use of Power Strips and Extension Cords: If you’re regularly using multiple power strips and extension cords, your current panel may not have enough circuits to meet your needs.
  • Outdated Electrical Panel: Homes built before 1960 often have outdated panels with fuses instead of circuit breakers. Upgrading to a modern panel with circuit breakers can improve safety and efficiency.
  • Inconsistent or Dimming Lights: If lights frequently dim when you plug in or turn on appliances, it can indicate an overloaded electrical panel.

If you’re experiencing these issues, an electrical panel upgrade can increase the safety and efficiency of your home’s electrical system.

The Process of an Electrical Panel Replacement

An electrical panel replacement or upgrade is a complex task that requires professional expertise. A licensed electrician will assess your current system, calculate your home’s electrical needs, and install a new panel that meets current electrical codes and safety standards.

Here are the general steps involved in an electrical panel replacement:

  • Assessment: The electrician will evaluate your home’s electrical usage and determine if an upgrade or replacement is necessary.
  • Choosing the Right Panel: Based on your home’s needs, the electrician will recommend an appropriate panel size, typically ranging from 100 to 200 amps or more for larger homes.
  • Installation: The old panel is disconnected, and the new panel is installed. This process may involve rewiring some circuits and ensuring all connections are properly grounded.
  • Inspection and Testing: After installation, the system is inspected and tested to ensure that it meets local codes and functions safely.

Benefits of an Electrical Panel Upgrade

Upgrading your electrical panel has several advantages, from improved safety to the capacity for future power needs. Here are some of the key benefits:

  • Increased Safety: Modern electrical panels have built-in safeguards that reduce the risk of electrical fires and shocks.
  • Higher Capacity: A new panel can handle the power needs of modern appliances and devices.
  • Better Efficiency: An upgraded electrical panel can improve the efficiency of your home’s electrical system, reducing energy waste.
  • Support for Home Automation: Many new panels are compatible with smart home systems, allowing for remote monitoring and control.

An electrical panel upgrade can enhance your home’s electrical infrastructure, offering peace of mind and added value to your property.

Electrical Panel Installation: Why Hire a Professional?

Electrical panel installation or replacement is not a DIY project. The process involves working with high-voltage electricity and requires a deep understanding of electrical systems. Hiring a professional electrician ensures the job is done safely, following all local codes and regulations.

Professional electricians have the expertise to safely install your new electrical panel, test the system for issues, and ensure that all components function as intended. Proper installation is essential to avoid risks like electrical fires, malfunctioning breakers, or overloaded circuits.

How to Prepare Your Air Conditioner for the Aurora and Naperville Summers https://www.perfecthomeservices.com/how-to-prepare-your-air-conditioner-for-summer/ Thu, 18 Apr 2024 21:12:47 +0000 https://www.perfecthomeservices.com/?p=4714

Summer temperatures in Aurora and Naperville can reach highs of over 80 degrees Fahrenheit, so you want to ensure your AC unit is working properly before the temperatures climb to these humid highs.

Here, we’ll discuss the importance of AC tune-ups and maintenance tips to help you keep your system in optimal condition.

Reasons to Tune Up AC for Summer

When winter turns to spring and summer approaches, scheduling an AC tuneup ensures the unit is ready for use. Here are five benefits of prioritizing summer AC maintenance:

  • Lower electricity bills: During warm summer months, you’ll likely run your air conditioning unit frequently. This can lead to higher electricity consumption. By tuning up the unit before the summer heat arrives, it will run more efficiently and consume less electricity. Regular cleaning can reduce energy consumption by up to 15%.
  • Fewer breakdowns: Maintaining up your AC unit ensures working parts are less likely to fail during frequent use. Tune-ups let you repair and replace various components to ensure the unit endures less wear and tear and can run smoothly throughout the summer.
  • Lower repair bills: If you do need to repair the unit, the repair costs will be lower if you prioritize regular maintenance. Because maintenance tuneups address the more costly problems like airflow problems and replacing parts, it’s less likely the unit will need major repairs.
  • Extended AC life span: Regular maintenance will also extend your unit’s life span by preventing breakdowns and letting you fix things before they become larger issues.
  • Enhanced air quality: During months when the AC is not running, dust and debris can build up and settle in the components. When summer arrives and you turn the unit on, all the build-up is released into the air, harming air quality. A routine tune-up will clear dust and debris, ensuring optimal indoor air quality.

Preparing Your AC for Summer

For an air conditioning unit to work correctly, you must regularly check its components. A general AC unit tuneup should include these essential actions:

Clear Debris From the Condenser

The air conditioner’s condenser is the outdoor component that collects heat from within the home and dissipates it. This unit uses high-pressure and temperature refrigerant vapor to condense and expel heat. Whether the AC is running or not, debris can accumulate on the condenser unit because it is located outside and exposed to dirt and weather.

Clear visible dirt and debris like moss, twigs, leaves and anything else that may be building up on the exterior condenser unit.

Clean and Fix the Condenser Fins

Turn the AC unit off and flip the circuit breaker switch off. You must remove the condenser unit’s top grille using a cordless drill. You will also remove the condenser fan assembly when removing the top grille. Make sure the fan wires remain connected to the condenser. Look for the condenser coils inside the unit.

The condenser coils are tubes that run through the thin aluminum fins. Inspect the fins using a flashlight. If you notice any damage, you can use a fin comb to straighten them. Otherwise, contacting an AC maintenance and repair service to repair the fins is best. If there is no damage, you can clean the components. Be careful not to touch the fins with your hands when cleaning them. Instead, gently clean the them using a soft bristle toothbrush.

Clean the Condenser Coils

The condenser coils are tubes that run through the fins. These metal tubes can become dirty over time — cleaning them properly requires a special solvent.

Spray AC foaming coil cleaner on the coils and wait about 20 minutes for the solvent to go to work. Then, spray the foam off with a garden hose sprayer. Avoid using a direct jet spray, as the water pressure might damage the aluminum fins.

Inspect the AC Condenser Unit Pad

The AC condenser unit rests on a concrete or composite rubber pad. This pad ensures the unit is level and raised enough to prevent water damage from puddles. If the unit pad is cracked or unlevel, the conder unit is at risk of major damage.

Inspect the pad to make sure there are no visible cracks or breaks in the material. Use a bubble level to make sure the unit is level. Place the bubble level on top of the unit in the center. If the bubble is in the center of the liquid, the unit is level. If the bubble lays on either side of the liquid instead, you’ll need to contact a maintenance and repair service to replace the unit pad.

Replace the Air Filters

A common reason for loss of airflow in an AC is dirty, blocked or damaged air filters. Because these filters catch dust and other particles to improve air quality, they become clogged over time due to the buildup.

Locate the box-shaped air handler cabinet to find the air filter. It’s generally best to replace the filters rather than attempt to clean them. You can use the size markings on the original filter to find a suitable replacement and swap the old one for the new one.

Your home’s air return vent may also have an air filter to replace. You’ll need a cordless drill to loosen the screws on the return vent cover if so.

Clean the Vents

The AC vents on the floors, walls or ceiling can clog over time. Pet dander, dust, spider webs and other debris can accumulate in the vents. Even if the AC unit seems to be working, this debris can impact air quality and irritate allergy symptoms.

To clean the vents, attach a brush hose to a regular household vacuum cleaner and brush the vent covers gently to pull the debris out.

Clear the Ducts

Ductwork runs from the air handler to the vents and from the air return to the air handler. The ductwork is typically contained inside a home’s walls, ceiling or floors.

It’s not always necessary to clear out the ductwork, although if you notice foul smells, mold, mildew or even dead animals could be a concern. Because the ductwork is embedded in the home’s structure, it’s wise to reach out to a professional service the moment you notice unpleasant odors seeping through the vents.

Reset the Thermostat for AC Use

The settings on your thermostat should change with the seasons. If you don’t yet have a smart thermostat, you will have to manually adjust the temperature settings. While setting the thermostat to about 68 degrees is suitable for cold winter months, the setting should be higher in summer. For warm Aurora and Naperville Summers, a thermostat temperature of 78°F is ideal when at home.

You can use voice commands to change the temperature in various rooms throughout your house. Technology integration also helps you automatically adjust your conditions to the weather and times of the day, enhancing your convenience and comfort.

Common Smart Thermostat Problems

While smart thermostats offer numerous benefits, they can have some downfalls when installed and programmed incorrectly.

  1. Improper placement: Placing your thermostat near heat sources like direct sunlight and vents can result in the sensors registering higher temperatures than your room condition. Conversely, positioning your device near windows and openings can lower temperature readings. These readings cause your HVAC system to adjust the temperature inaccurately.
  2. User error: Incorrectly programming your thermostat or selecting the wrong settings can lead to temperature imbalances and inaccurate condition preferences.
  3. Faulty sensors: Smart thermostats have sensors for detecting temperature and movement. It can tell when someone is in the room and adjust temperatures accordingly. If these sensors malfunction, your device won’t accurately read room temperatures and occupancy, leading to imbalanced or inappropriate conditions.
  4. Incorrect calibration: If your thermostat isn’t pre-calibrated, you must set it to ensure accurate temperature readings. An incorrectly calibrated device can turn your HVAC on or off at the wrong times.

What to Consider When Deciding on a Home Thermostat

While different thermostat models offer various features, some might have specs more suited to your goals and needs. Considering them can help you identify the features that are essential or suitable for you.

Remote Monitoring

Consider a thermostat with quality sensors if you want the convenience of controlling and monitoring your temperatures anywhere and anytime. With reliable sensors, your device can accurately detect temperature fluctuations and room activity and optimally adjust your internal conditions. For example, the thermostat sensors will notice inactivity and turn off or modify your temperatures to save energy if you are away from home.

Voice Command

Do you want to feel optimal temperatures when you walk in your front door? Or, maybe a cool breeze improves your sleep quality. If these options sound perfect, consider a thermostat with voice control technology. Smart thermostats are compatible with numerous voice assistants like Google and conveniently sync with your devices.

Dual Operation

Getting used to digital commands and programming can take time, especially after using an older, conventional thermostat your whole life. You might prefer manual temperature settings at first.

Fortunately, various smart thermostats offer dual operations. You can manually change the temperature anytime using the controls. Or, once you’ve programmed your thermostat, you can leave it up to your smart device to adjust your conditions. The choice is yours.

Energy Monitoring

If your most significant concern is improving energy efficiency and lowering utility bills, consider thermostats with advanced energy monitoring features. Some thermostats send reports identifying energy or high consumption peaks, while others provide alerts and notifications. Installing a device with these features can make you more aware and proactive about conserving energy and reducing waste.

Air Quality Sensors

If improving indoor air quality is your chief concern, you should consider thermostats with built-in sensors. These detectors measure volatile organic compounds and pollutants in the air. When your device senses high contaminant levels and poor air quality, it can automatically adjust settings like turning on ventilation to purify the atmosphere

Air quality sensors can be excellent in reducing indoor pollution and providing healthy air quality, which can be especially beneficial for family members with allergies, heart disease and respiratory illnesses.

Why Is My Air Conditioner Blowing Hot Air? https://www.perfecthomeservices.com/why-is-my-air-conditioner-blowing-hot-air/ Fri, 09 Feb 2024 15:54:14 +0000 https://www.perfecthomeservices.com/?p=4670 Reasons Why Your AC is Blowing Hot Air

Imagine this — you’re sitting at home on a hot summer day, hoping that your air conditioner will cool the house down enough so you can feel comfortable when you realize it’s actually blowing hot air! When your AC starts pushing out warm air instead of a cool breeze, it’s usually not good news and means something has gone wrong with your unit.  There are several ways that this could happen, so it’s important to diagnose the specific issue before you start to melt in your own house. Our Perfect Home Services team is here to ensure you get to the bottom of the problem and start getting your humble abode in the Chicagoland area nice and cold this season.

Your Air Filter Needs to be Cleaned

If your air conditioner is blowing a hot draft, one possible reason is that your home’s air filter is dirty. A clogged air filter will restrict airflow, causing your AC to work harder and making it less efficient. Not only will this make your humble abode less comfortable, but it will also drive up your energy bills. So cleaning it out as soon as possible is key to enjoying a cool house.

Low Refrigerant Levels

Refrigerant is what your air conditioner utilizes to cool the air inside your home. So, if your AC is blowing hot air, it could be because it’s low on refrigerant. You’ll know this is the case if you hear a hissing noise coming from your unit, which is the sound of refrigerant escaping. If you think your AC is starting to lose these important measurements, it’s best to call a professional for an air conditioner service.

Incorrect Thermostat Settings

Don’t worry; this happens more often than you think! Sometimes, we accidentally set our settings to “heat” instead of “cool.” Even if this isn’t the case, the temperature could be set too high, causing the AC to work overtime and eventually blow out a hot blast. Or, perhaps, the issue lies in the temperature-controlling device itself, meaning it’s time for a thermostat repair.

Clogged Condensate Line

The condensate line is responsible for extracting moisture from the air and your unit; if it becomes clogged, that moisture has nowhere to go. As a result, your AC cannot remove humid air, which can cause it to blow a warm breeze. Include cleaning your condensate line in your regular air conditioner maintenance to avoid this issue in the future!

Dirty Evaporator Coils

One of the most common reasons your air conditioner might be blowing hot air is because of dirty evaporator coils. When these coils get dusty or dirty, they can’t effectively absorb heat. This causes your air conditioner to work harder and eventually leads to hot air being blown into your home. Professionals will need to turn off your AC unit and remove the access panel to clean or replace the evaporator coils.

Your Unit Needs to be Replaced

Sometimes, the answers to your problems will subside when you upgrade your central cooling system altogether. As units get older, they start to lose their efficiency and have to work harder to cool your home. This causes them to use more energy, leading to higher utility bills. If your central comfort system is over ten years old, it’s probably time for an air conditioner replacement.

How to Prevent Pipes From Freezing https://www.perfecthomeservices.com/prevent-frozen-pipes/ Fri, 26 Jan 2024 14:32:28 +0000 https://www.perfecthomeservices.com/?p=4652 Winter presents many challenges for homeowners, especially in the Chicago area where temperatures often drop below freezing in the colder months. A common issue you may experience is freezing pipes in and outside your home. Dealing with frozen pipes isn’t only inconvenient — it can have costly consequences.

How long it takes for pipes to freeze depends on the amount of exposure to freezing temperatures. It can take hours or days to reach the freezing point, depending on whether the exposure is direct or minimal.

What happens when pipes freeze? The pipes expand and contract as water freezes and thaws. Increased pressure during expansion can cause the plumbing components to burst, especially in weak and worn areas.

Learn more about why avoiding frozen pipes is so important, and the top six ways you can prevent them from freezing.

Risks and Consequences of Frozen Pipes

The main risk that frozen pipes present is that they can burst or lead to leaks, causing structural damage to your home.

Leaks that go unnoticed can cause spikes in your water bill and slow but steady damage to your home’s foundation. Even worse, a burst pipe can result in a flooded basement and damage to your property that is expensive to repair. Another risk is mold and mildew formation in damp and dark areas like the basement. Mold grows and spreads rapidly in these conditions and can affect the health of everyone in your home.

Preventing leaks and frozen plumbing components can help mitigate these risks.

Top 6 Ways to Prevent Pipes From Freezing

The first step to prevent your plumbing from freezing is to locate the pipe network inside and outside your home. Pipes are found in interior and exterior walls, attics, crawl spaces and basements.

Avoid the need to replace your pipes by following these top six ways to prevent freezing pipes in winter.

top 6 ways to prevent pipes from freezing

1. Insulate the Pipes

Insulated pipes are effective in combating freezing temperatures. The insulation material controls temperatures by limiting heat loss and protects them from the effects of the freeze-thaw cycle. Insulation also helps reduce utility bills over time by increasing the water temperature, reducing the need to maintain high settings on your hot water heater. Areas like attics and basements with little heat exposure are ideal for installing insulation.

Pipe sleeves are insulated rings around the pipes that protect them from external damage, corrosion and freezing. The sleeves are durable enough to withstand environmental factors and are used in complex pipework systems. Foam piping is an insulation material that offers the same protection and defense against freezing.

You can insulate exterior outlets and fixtures attached to internal pipes to promote heat retention. Some pipes are tricky to reach, making it nearly impossible to insulate them on your own. In these cases, a professional plumber can insulate hard-to-reach pipes with the necessary tools and expertise.

2. Implement Heat Sources

Additional measures to enhance insulation include heat sources like heat tape or heating cables. Heat tape is comprised of an electrical cable wrapped around the pipe. One end is plugged into an outlet for electricity to regulate the temperature as it drops below freezing, increasing the heat to control the pipe’s temperature.

In addition, heat lamps and space heaters can keep cold and damp areas dry and warm, especially in attics and crawl spaces that are normally damp. Keep in mind that these heating options should never be left unattended or running overnight.

3. Weatherproof Your Home

Weatherproofing your home before winter has numerous benefits. First, identify areas in your home that are prone to allowing cold air to enter. Seal any gaps and holes that can let in drafts. You can also weatherstrip windows and doors, including the garage door, to keep cold air away from plumbing components.

4. Winterize Outdoor Pipes and Faucets

Outdoor pipes and faucets are in direct contact with extreme cold, ice and snow and are more vulnerable to freezing. Hose bibs or exterior faucets and valves must be closed completely to prevent the main water line from freezing. Cover faucets with insulated sleeves as you would inside for extra protection.

You can also disconnect your hose from the faucet, roll up the hose and store it in your garage or basement for winter to prevent damage due to exposure.

5. Maintain Moderate Indoor Temperatures

Keeping your home warm in winter may be one of the best preventative measures to avoid frozen plumbing. Set the thermostat to consistently remain at a minimum of 55 degrees Fahrenheit throughout winter. Any dips below this temperature inside your home could result in your pipes freezing.

One trick is to keep your bathroom and kitchen cabinets open, allowing your heat to make more contact with your pipes. The warm air transfers through the walls so that pipes are less likely to freeze.

It’s also a good idea to use additional heat sources in spaces where temperatures tend to fluctuate and drop, including closets and staircases. Run space heaters periodically to regulate the temperature in these areas, but make sure to never leave a space heater unattended.

If you have a garage, it’s important to make sure the garage door stays closed to keep your heat inside and keep cold air away from your plumbing.

6. Allow Pipes to Drip Overnight

It may sound counterintuitive, but the best way to prevent pipes from freezing when temperatures plummet is to allow water to drip from your faucets at a very slow trickle. Taking this step is particularly important for faucets on outside walls to reduce pressure buildup and make sure your pipes won’t freeze during a particularly cold night.

Perfect Home Services Helps Smart Start Academy in an Emergency https://www.perfecthomeservices.com/smart-start-academy/ Thu, 11 Jan 2024 19:47:54 +0000 https://www.perfecthomeservices.com/?p=4628 Your health could be at risk without a suitable air conditioning system, especially on scorching days. That was Perfect Home Service’s concern and what prompted our immediate desire to help when we learned of Smart Start Academy’s broken air conditioning system emergency on a sweltering summer’s day.

When the A/C in Smart Start Academy’s newborn and toddler rooms stopped working in the summer heat, they immediately contacted a service provider to repair the faulty system. The problem was that the service provider needed to order parts to fix the system. This delayed repairs until mid-morning the following day, leaving the babies and toddlers without A/C until then.

When our team at Perfect Home Services heard about Smart Start Academy’s plight, we knew we had to find a way to ensure their children’s safety. Knowing the health dangers of extreme heat, we quickly delivered three portable air conditioning units to Smart Start Academy. With the portable units in place, the newborns and toddlers remained cool and protected from the heat while the academy waited for the repair of its A/C system.

After we delivered the portable units, Smart Start Academy’s director expressed their gratitude, saying, “I just wanted to send out a big THANK YOU! to Perfect Home Services for all your help in our time of need. We would have been lost without you.”

8 Plumbing Repairs to Leave to a Professional https://www.perfecthomeservices.com/professional-plumbing-repairs/ Thu, 11 Jan 2024 19:28:26 +0000 https://www.perfecthomeservices.com/?p=4624 Though you may be handy around the house and enjoy tackling minor DIY repairs, you’re usually better off consulting a professional than dealing with your plumbing yourself. While plumbing problems like slow-draining sinks are easy to notice and may seem insignificant, they could indicate a more severe concern that only a skilled plumber should address.

Learn more about the importance of professional plumbing repairs, the potential risks of DIY plumbing and eight examples of jobs you should leave to a trained expert.

The Importance of Professional Plumbing Repairs

Professional plumbers complete hours of classroom and hands-on training to master a specific skill set. That’s why you can trust them to handle any plumbing job, no matter how minor. Enlisting a qualified plumber’s help is valuable for the following reasons:

  • Plumbing codes and regulations compliance
  • Efficient and swift leak detection and repairs
  • Reduced recurring plumbing issues and callbacks
  • Less risk of personal injury due to inexperience
  • Proficient plumbing fitting installations and troubleshooting
  • Quality water control for safe consumption and residential use
  • Workmanship done to a high standard

A skilled plumber equipped with the correct tools and knowledge can provide unparalleled service. You will save time, money and effort you would have otherwise wasted by trying to fix an issue and accidentally making it worse.

Potential Risks of DIY Plumbing

You may have tried resolving a few common plumbing issues yourself with household items like plungers or chemical drain cleaners. However, here are some risks you may encounter when attempting DIY plumbing methods.

risks of DIY plumbing graphic

    • Replacing parts: It’s tempting to try assembling parts like faucets and showerheads on your own, but you could end up doing it wrong, leaving you with incorrectly installed or broken components and wasting your precious time and money.

    • Potential harm or injury: You could injure yourself by working on something outside your knowledge scope. In contrast, a plumber’s training and licensure include safety standards.

    • Unclogging drains, toilets and showers: Water may overflow when trying to unclog drains like the toilet or sink. What looks like an easy fix could become a significant issue, depending on what obstructs the pipeway.

    • Snaking objects down pipes and drains: Many people try to fish an item out of the drain with a coat hanger. This technique is usually ineffective and might do more harm than good, leading to an unsuccessful attempt and an unresolved problem.

A professional plumber will handle any job properly so you can get on with your other responsibilities. You’ll reduce risks and save time and money in the long run.

8 Plumbing Repairs Best Left to Professionals

Whenever you face plumbing repairs or issues, you should call a reputable plumbing company for help. You will pay for their time and services, but the peace of mind you’ll gain in return is priceless. Here are eight plumbing repairs for a professional to handle.

plumbing repairs best left to professionals

1. Main Sewer Line

The main sewer line carries a household’s wastewater through a pipework channel to a treatment plant for safe disposal. Invasive tree roots may penetrate the line, causing blockages. You may notice the toilet and other drains clogging up with waste material and use a plunger or toilet auger to unblock them. Ultimately, this fix is only temporary because it does not address the problem at the broken pipe site.

A plumber can pinpoint the source of the blockage with a specialized waterproof camera. After assessing the extent of the damage, they can repair or replace the sewer line accordingly.

2. Gas Line Leak

If your home relies on natural gas heating, you should be aware of the potential dangers of a gas leak to you and your family. You might identify a leak through hissing pipe sounds, rusting pipes, a foul lingering sulfur smell, problematic gas appliances and higher-than-usual energy bills.

Besides the physical health risks, leaking gas may cause fires and explosions. Since attempting to fix a gas line leak can be so dangerous, never do it yourself. Call a plumber immediately.

3. Burst or Frozen Pipes

A burst, leaking or frozen pipe also requires professional attention. Once a pipe bursts, the water damage can be extensive. An invisible leak is a less evident problem, but the most apparent symptom is higher water bills. Frozen pipes can break if mishandled. Pipes buried underground or hidden behind walls are challenging or impossible to see and access without specialized equipment. A plumber will inspect the pipes and provide the necessary repairs based on the issue. They can locate the problem and fix it immediately.

4. Water Heater

When you notice low water pressure or a lack of hot water, there could be an issue with the water heater. Upon inspection, you may find a puddle surrounding the heater or loud noises coming from it.

Water heaters are under tremendous pressure and can explode if mishandled, causing extensive damage. Instead of attempting to fix a water heater on your own, call a plumber to safely complete a repair or replacement.

5. Kitchen Sink

The kitchen sink tends to get clogged more often than other drains due to a mix of cooking oils and food scraps. The pipes may burst due to excess pressure building up, resulting in costly damage repairs. Though you could try using a plunger to unblock the drain, it’s best to consult a plumber for a thorough inspection. They’ll check the pipes to see what’s causing the blockage and remove it.

6. Water Pressure Drop

You may have a blocked or burst pipe if there’s a sudden drop in water pressure. The source could be anywhere. A plumber can detect the problem and repair or replace it, saving you the hassle.

7. The Toilet

When you have a burst or blocked pipe, the water in your toilet might back up and overflow, which can be a cleaning nightmare. The waste material can also pose health risks if it spills all over. Call a plumber immediately to pinpoint the source of the trouble and fix it.

8. Garbage Disposal

While garbage disposals are miraculously convenient, they can’t handle everything you might carelessly throw down your drain. A blocked garbage disposal can result from large or fibrous food chunks. Sometimes, foreign matter can get stuck in the blades or the grinding chamber. You could inspect it by switching off the power and looking for food pieces inside the machine, but there’s always a risk of injury involved.

The best solution is to contact a plumber to check the unit and remove any blockages.

The Beginner’s Guide to Heat Pumps https://www.perfecthomeservices.com/what-is-a-heat-pump/ Wed, 29 Nov 2023 09:28:37 +0000 https://www.perfecthomeservices.com/?p=4588 Heat pump sales officially surpassed gas furnace sales in 2023, and it’s not hard to see why — these appliances are more sustainable, cost-efficient and comfortable than conventional HVAC equipment in almost every way.

With the Inflation Reduction Act offering federal tax credits for eligible homeowners who install energy-efficient renovations, there has never been a better time to consider an upgrade.

This guide provides a brief overview of everything you need to know about heat pumps, including the incentives you can use to finance your investment.

What Is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is an all-in-one heating and cooling system that regulates temperature by transferring heat between the outside and your home’s interior, and vice versa.

Usually, these devices come in two forms.

  • Ducted: Traditional ducted heat pumps consist of a single outdoor unit that uses a system of ducts and vents to move air through your home. This option is usually best for larger homes with existing ductwork.
  • Ductless: Like a mini-split AC, heat pump units labeled “ductless” have two parts — one inside your home and the other outside. This model is a good option if you lack existing or functioning ducts.

Heat pumps run on electricity, so they don’t burn fossil fuels at the point of use. Essentially, using a heat pump can help you shrink your carbon footprint and contribute to a healthier environment.

How Does a Heat Pump Work?

Unlike furnaces and air conditioners, heat pumps do not generate hot or cold air. Instead, a heat pump works by pulling the existing heat from one area and moving it to another. This transfer process allows it to serve dual purposes depending on your immediate needs.

For example, in fall and winter, the pump will absorb heat from outside your home and transfer it indoors. This process reverses in spring and summer.

Heat sources include the following.

  • Air: Air-source heat pumps move heat between the air inside and outside the home.
  • Geothermal: Ground-source heat pumps transfer heat from within the earth inside, and vice versa.

Most general-purpose heat pumps work best in climates where it doesn’t get too cold — the South and Southwest are ideal regions for upgrading to this technology. For efficient temperature control in frigid temperatures, you’ll want to install a pump specially designed for cold climates or pair yours with a backup furnace.

How Long Do Heat Pumps Last?

Heat pumps typically last anywhere from 10 to 15 years, though some can last even longer with proactive maintenance.

While this life span is somewhat shorter than traditional HVAC equipment, remember that heat pumps see year-round use. In contrast, you only use your air conditioner and furnace for a few months at a time.

Heat pumps are also relatively new, and technological advancements come out every year. Newer developments may enable life spans that could even exceed standard HVAC systems.

What Are the Benefits of a Heat Pump?

There are many reasons to invest in energy-efficient home appliances like heat pumps, solar panels or tankless water heaters. Here are some of the most significant benefits of installing a heat pump in your home.

What Are the Benefits of a Heat Pump?

Energy Efficiency

Heat pumps don’t generate heat — instead, they transfer warmth between locations. The process uses significantly less energy, which helps cut down your usage and keeps your utility bills low.

Generally, geothermal heat pumps are environmentally friendlier than air-source pumps. Still, regardless of the type you choose, a heat pump is more energy-efficient than traditional HVAC systems.

Environmentally Friendly

Because heat pumps don’t burn fossil fuels locally, installing one can help you contribute to a more sustainable future. Heat pumps are electric systems, and many utility companies provide electric power from renewable sources like wind and solar.

Additionally, replacing gas furnaces can reduce the risk of methane leaks, which can accidentally harm the environment by releasing potent greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Experts estimate heat pump use could cut global emissions by half a gigaton by 2030 — that’s a billion tons!

Improved Air Quality

Because heat pumps circulate air between your home’s interior and exterior, you always have fresh air inside. Improving your indoor air quality can alleviate symptoms like:

  • Sinus irritation
  • Headaches
  • Respiratory issues
  • Allergies

It can also act as an air freshener by cycling old, musty air outside the home. If you frequently cook with pungent ingredients like garlic or onions, a heat pump could keep your home smelling fresh without candles or air freshener sprays.

Quiet Operation

While traditional HVAC units can be noisy, heat pumps are only about as loud as your standard dishwasher. Because conventional ducted units sit outside your home, they are the quieter option — but you can find ductless systems that operate at lower decibel ratings than most household appliances.

What Government Incentives Are Available for Heat Pumps?

Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act of 2023, you can make your home more efficient while saving hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

The Energy-Efficient Home Improvement Credit allows eligible homeowners to take a tax credit of 30% of the total cost of their heat pump system for the year of installation. The limit on this credit is $2,000.

Homeowners who install an energy-efficient heat pump in their principal residence are eligible for this incentive. The eligibility period ends in 2032.

Note that this credit only applies to your existing structures — new construction and rentals are ineligible.

Many states also issue rebates for heat pump installations, though terms will vary depending on where you live. Check your state government’s website to learn more.
